Why rugs need specialist care

DIY rug cleaning with rental machines or household products carries real risks. Overwetting a wool rug can cause shrinkage and fibre distortion. Alkaline cleaning solutions strip the natural lanolin from wool, leaving it brittle and dull. Colour bleed on oriental and Persian rugs is common when the wrong products or water temperatures are used.

Professional rug cleaning protects against all of these. John's Woolsafe certification means he is trained and approved to clean wool and other natural fibres safely, using products that have been independently tested and verified. Combined with specialist equipment and full insurance, it gives you confidence that your rug is in qualified hands.

Rug types we clean

  • Persian rugs: often hand knotted from wool or silk with vegetable based dyes. They need careful dye testing and low moisture techniques to keep colours vibrant and the pile dense.
  • Oriental rugs: including Turkish, Afghan, Indian and Chinese pieces. We allow for differences in knot density, fibre blend and dye stability between regional styles.
  • Wool rugs: cleaned with pH neutral, Woolsafe approved solutions to keep them soft. We never use harsh alkaline products on wool.
  • Silk and silk blend rugs: extremely delicate, so we use minimal agitation and carefully controlled moisture.
  • Synthetic rugs: polypropylene, nylon and polyester rugs respond well to hot water extraction at 120°C and can take more intensive stain treatment.
  • Antique and hand knotted rugs: handled gently at every stage because of their age, fragility and value.
  • Modern area rugs: from flatweaves to thick shag pile, each with an adjusted technique and drying time.

Agitated, not just sprayed

Most of our rug cleaning is done in your home with portable professional equipment. Every rug is vacuumed to lift dry soil, pre-sprayed and spot treated, then agitated with a brush so the solution reaches the base of the pile. Depending on the rug, we then rinse it with hot water extraction at 120°C using our Power-Flex Storm 800psi machine, or use a low moisture dry cleaning system for delicate fibres and dyes.

Stain treatment and deodoriser come as standard. We use eco friendly products wherever possible, and our cleaning agents are free from harsh or caustic chemicals, so they are safe with children and pets. For wool we only use pH neutral, Woolsafe approved solutions, and for silk and antique rugs we keep agitation and moisture to a minimum to protect the fibres and dyes. Fringes are cleaned separately and the pile is groomed by hand for an even finish.

When to book a rug clean

Grit works its way to the base of the pile and wears the fibres every time the rug is walked on, long before it looks dirty. A professional clean removes that grit along with stains, odours and allergens, and the high temperature of hot water extraction kills bacteria and dust mites living in the pile. It also brings back colour that has dulled over time.

It is worth booking if your rug has a spill or pet accident, smells stale, has a dull traffic lane or has not been cleaned for a year or more. Treating a stain early also gives it the best chance of coming out.

Drying times

Most rugs are dry within 4 to 12 hours, depending on thickness, fibre and the cleaning method used. Thick wool and hand knotted rugs take longer than synthetic flatweaves, and rugs cleaned with our low moisture dry cleaning method dry much faster. Drying is controlled to prevent shrinkage, mould or dye migration, and we bring a turbo dryer fan to speed things up if needed. A final inspection makes sure the rug is clean, fresh and back to its best, and we will give you specific guidance for your rug before we leave.

After cleaning, we strongly recommend a soil protector such as Scotchgard. It helps the rug shed dirt and stains and extends the time between cleans.

Rugs, carpets and sofas on one visit

If your fitted carpets need a refresh too, our carpet cleaning uses the same professional extraction equipment. We also offer upholstery cleaning for sofas, armchairs and dining chairs, and we clean mattresses and other soft furnishings in your home. Our minimum charge for any job is £110, which covers bringing and setting up the equipment, so combining a rug with a room or a sofa is good value.

We are fully insured and Woolsafe approved, with a Woolsafe Registered Inspector. We were named Best Carpet and Upholstery in Surrey in the SME News UK Enterprise Awards 2026, and we guarantee you will love the results: if you are not 100 per cent satisfied, we will re-clean your rug.

Call or message us with the size and type of your rug, ideally with a photo, and we will give you honest advice and clear pricing. We are available Monday to Saturday, 8am to 5:30pm.

FAQs

Rug cleaning questions

How much does rug cleaning cost?

Our rug cleaning starts from £50, depending on size. A small synthetic rug costs less than a large hand knotted Persian piece that needs specialist attention. Our minimum charge for any job is £110, so it is worth combining a rug with other rugs, a room of carpet or a sofa. Send us the size and type and we will confirm the price before any work begins.

Can you clean a wool rug at home?

Regular vacuuming and blotting spills straight away helps, but deep cleaning wool at home is risky. Too much water can shrink or distort the rug, and many household products are too alkaline and strip the natural lanolin. We clean wool rugs with pH neutral, Woolsafe approved products and controlled moisture.

Can you clean oriental and Persian rugs safely?

Yes. John's Woolsafe certification and specialist training mean we are fully equipped for oriental and Persian rug cleaning. Every piece has a dye stability test before cleaning begins, and we choose methods and products to suit the rug's fibre, age and construction, so colours stay vibrant and fibres stay intact.

Do you clean rugs in my home or collect them?

We clean most rugs at your property using portable professional equipment. For rugs that need more intensive treatment, we can discuss collection and return. Contact us and we will advise on the best approach for your rug.

How long do rugs take to dry after cleaning?

Usually 4 to 12 hours, depending on the rug's thickness, fibre and the method used. Thick wool and hand knotted rugs take longer than synthetic flatweaves, and rugs cleaned with our low moisture dry cleaning method dry significantly faster. We will give you guidance for your rug at the time.

How often should a rug be professionally cleaned?

For most rugs, every 12 to 18 months is enough. Rugs in hallways, under dining tables or in homes with pets and children benefit from more frequent cleaning, because grit in the pile wears the fibres down over time.

What if I am not happy with my rug clean?

We guarantee you will love the results. If you are not 100 per cent satisfied, tell us and we will re-clean the rug.
